COSMELAN
What is Cosmelan?
Cosmelan Depigmentation Treatment is a type of chemical peel used to reduce unwanted pigmentation in the skin. It consists of two different types of product applications: a mask applied in the clinic and consistent homecare products post treatment. Primarily used on the face it is effective at combating hyper- pigmentation, melasma (pregnancy mask), acne scarring and general skin discolouration.
Cosmelan works by inhibiting melanin production. Melanin is responsible for the dark pigmentation seen on the skin. The body produces melanin as a response to UV exposure however hormones, ageing, and acne can also be a trigger due to inflammation. By inhibiting a specific type of enzyme (tyrosinase) that is directly involved in the production of melanin Cosmelan can reduce melanin production and the discolouration it causes in the skin.
What does the treatment involve?
The two-phase intensive treatment program firstly involves the application of a highly potent de-pigmenting mask. This is applied at the clinic and is not washed off for up to 10 hours following application (dependent on skin type). The second treatment phase is at-home maintenance creams that should be applied twice daily to enhance the effects of the mask.
Two to three days after the treatment is applied, the skin will begin to flake and peel. For these first few days, the face may feel tight, itchy and appear reddened.
What is the cost?
The cost of the Cosmelan treatment is $1650.
This includes:
1 x AHA pre-peel the week prior to application
Your in clinic Cosmelan application
3 x Healite sessions following your treatment
1 x a Stem Call or Vitamin C maintenance facial 6 weeks following your Cosmelan treatment 1 x initial full sized homecare products
A second pot of Cosmelan 2 home maintenance cream will need to be purchased at 8 weeks post treatment for $379.
Who can have this treatment?

Cosmelan is not suitable for clients who have been on Roaccutane in the last 6 months, have cystic acne, open wounds, infections, rosacea, psoriasis or dermatitis in the area to be treated.
Cosmelan is not recommended for those that are pregnant or nursing as fluctuating hormones may cause the pigmentation to return.
Cosmelan Prep
Melissa Jean Skin Therapy recommends prepping your skin with a minimum of 2 DMK Enzymes to strengthen your skin prior to application.
Avoid any chemical peel or laser procedures 14 days prior to treatment with Cosmelan. Refrain from waxing or the use of other depilatory products for 7 days prior to treatment.
Aftercare
During your in salon Cosmelan application you will be advised how long to leave the mask on for. If the mask becomes flakey you can emulsify it with the SMALLEST amount of water on your fingertips (rinse fingertips, flick and work in lightly) or alternatively Evian mist can be purchased from a chemist to keep the mask moist.
The night of your Cosmelan procedure simply rinse the remaining product off with water, pat dry and DO NOT apply any further products.
The following morning, and for 72 hours post treatment, the ONLY products you can use are your HydraCream Fusion Cleanser, Hydratonic Mist, Melan Recovery, Hydra Vital Face Mask, MesoProtech Melan 130 SPF.
AFTER the 72 hour period you can then introduce Cosmelan 2 as in the sequence shown below.

Following 4 weeks of this skin care routine you can re-consult with your therapist if you wish to look at re- introducing some of your other products through the day but DO NOT guess and DO NOT do this without consultation.
Post treatment sun exposure should be avoided and the use of a broad spectrum SPF is recommended. We recommend that you avoid getting another treatment or procedure (including peels, facials, or microdermabrasion) on the treated area for 6 weeks following Cosmelan. While maintaining Cosmelan homecare, discontinue its use for 5 days prior to waxing, and do not restart cosmelan treatment until 3 days after waxing.
