The science of sleep and healthy skin
The science of sleep and healthy skin 🌿
It's no secret that nowadays most of us don't get enough sleep. But did you know that your skin does most of its constructive and regenerative work overnight? Your skin repairs itself while you are sleeping.
In daylight hours, your skin operates in a totally different way. Essentially your skin cells are in defense mode to protect themselves from UV exposure and free radical damage. This is big reason why we recommend protecting the skin through the day with a SPF 50+ sunscreen and our home prescriptives.
When the sun goes down, your mind and body switch to regenerative mode. The body is preparing you for rest and repair.
Between the hours of 9pm and midnight, your skin renewal rate almost doubles and cell damage begins to reverse. As your collagen production and body temperature rise, so too does your melatonin production. Collagen assists in minimising fine lines, while melatonin acts as an antioxidant that also helps your brain to switch into rest mode. Cortisol levels (stress hormone) fall during sleep which helps in the cell repairing process.
That's part of the reason why we recommend cleansing morning and night and applying a serum before you jump into bed. Boost your skin's ability to function at its best by prioritising sleep and please let us know how it goes!
Much love,
MJB ✨
